Looking for a fun family activity this New Year? Try creating a time capsule with your children. Time passes quickly on the journey of motherhood, but for little ones, a year is a very long time. A lot can happen in their young lives. So teach them to celebrate the milestones and blessings of the previous year. And help them reflect on how much they have learned and grown.
How to Create a Family New Year’s Time Capsule
1. Buy a mailing tube or cylindrical container and let the kids decorate it with paint, markers or stickers or whatever creative supplies you have on hand.
2. Download our printable or use colorful scrap paper to help your children write their answers to the New Year’s Time Capsule prompts below.
3. Ask and add your own questions to personalize the activity!
4. If you have preschool age children (or teenagers who don’t feel like writing), you could try this activity as a video interview.
5. Let everyone share their answers before placing the papers in your time capsule.
6. Add anything else you want to preserve – like a favorite drawing, an award certificate, a photo, a ticket stub or story. Let each child choose something that holds personal meaning. You may even want to write a letter to your child and include it.
7. Seal your time capsule with packing tape or fun colored Duct tape.
8. Commemorate the time capsule with a prayer of thankfulness to God for all that was accomplished in the past year and a toast with sparkling juice or a treat to celebrate the new year.
9. Store the time capsule where you’ll know to find it.
10. Next year, open the time capsule and let everyone read their notes before creating a new one.
