Driving is a huge step of freedom in a teen’s life, but it often comes with large amounts of anxiety for parents. If you have a teen who is nearing the driving age, you have probably already talked to him about the rules you have in place to keep him safe behind the wheel. We want to help make expectations clear and consequences consistent with iMOM’s Teen Driving Contract. A teen driving contract is a chance for your teen to give his word that he will make safe decisions, and it will serve as a constant reminder of what will happen if his side of the agreement is broken.
As you contemplate your teenager driving, you experience a mix of emotions and thoughts. Concern for your child’s safety is paramount, coupled with the realization that granting independence through driving is a significant milestone. You’re probably thinking about the importance of thorough driving education, reinforcing responsible behavior on the road, and instilling good decision-making skills. Trust in your teenager’s ability to handle the newfound responsibility comes with an underlying anxiety for potential risks. Balancing pride in your teen’s growing independence and the innate worry that comes with letting go, you navigate the delicate transition of watching your teenager take the wheel and embark on a new chapter of adulthood.
We know this is an exciting but emotional time for you, so review the teen driving contract with your child, and rest easy knowing you’ve communicated with your new driver what you believe is the safe way to drive. Then send him to the grocery store for your next errand. This is newly found freedom, Mom!
If you want some other contracts for your kids, have them sign the social media contract or the cell phone contract today.
